Hi there,
My name is Angelica and i'm interested in getting involved in
competitive trail riding.
Is there anyone in the Elgin County area that does competitive trail riding?
I would also be interested in volunteering at any local events!
Please let me know!
Look forward to hearing from you!

Angelica

Hi,

I am new here and just saw this thread. I live in Huron County, about 1 hour north of London. Competitive Trail Riding is something that interests me.
Are there any other riders in the area ( Stratford-Goderich) who are involved in this sport?

Hi Trillium and Angelica. I am a competitive trail/endurance rider from Oxford County, so I don't live too far away from either of you.

If either of you have any questions about distance riding, I'd be happy to help.

I am also new to competative trail riding. I helped out with one in South Dakota in August. It was awesome. Are the rides the same in Ontario as they are in the USA with obsticles. The one I helped with was 8 miles which seems short by comparison to the information I have read on this site.

There are some quite different variations on the sport of "Competitive Trail" throughout North America (and even within Canada). I think that if you saw an 8 mile trail ride with obstacles, then you were looking at some form of "Judged Competitive Trail" which is a little different from the sport we offer.

Competitive Trail in OCTRA is a minimum of 25 miles (for open competition - occasionally a bit less for novice). And we have no judging of how the competitors negotiate obstacles. It's strictly judged on time (pacing) and the condition of your horse at the checks.

You should definitely come out to a ride and see how it works. Volunteering is the best way. If you can get a job as a recorder for the vets/judges, you learn tons. That's how I started and I loved it.

Thanks Deanna,

My husband and I are certainly hoping to get out next season. Do you know if there is any group doing the 'Judged Competitive Trail' in Canada.

There is something of that sort in Quebec. It's called TREC, and
a description of the competition can be found at www.cheval.qc.ca. You'll
need to understand French though as there's no English translation. I understand there are 3 elements to the competition, one which is
similar (but not identical) to what OCTRA offers, one which is essentially an obstacle course, and one which demonstrates the horse's training
at various speeds.

Annie and I did a TREC this summer in Hudson, Quebec. It had a 10 kilo
trail that you did by following a map, and then about 12 obsticales once everyone came in off the trail.
It was alot of fun. Annie and I are going back to learn about map reading and there is a lot to learn in order to read it properly and not get lost and the obsticales were things that you may encounter on the trail. We went and watched one, and then did some practicing before hand, for some of the obsticales. It teaches your horse to be handy. If you have a horse that jumps that really helps. I am not a jumper, 1 foot intimadates me.
They did it in english and french to accomodate us, and they are planning to do it again next year, but yes, most of the TREC is in french, it is big here in Quebec.
Annie did very well, I think she is hooked.

Hi
I live in Stratford and am looking for more trails and have done a little in the Goderich area this past summer so hope to do more next year!

Let me know if you need anything as I will do my best to help. I have been involved with OCTRA many years and try to do most rides in the season!
