This weekend, while we were at Lindsay Fairgrounds, I met a man from OCTRA, on a lovely 16 yr old Arab mare. I feel terrible that I can't recall his name! While the QH I was on was busy spooking at puddles and small ponies pulling a wagon, we had a discussion about electrolytes. I can't remember what he recommended! I even repeated the name of it to myself 2 or 3 times. Help?!
I'm very dedicated to making sure our horses make it across Canada safely, in good health. I value your opions so much, since you're the experts on the topic! |

Hi longride4longrun. That would be me you were talking to, Bob Coleman. The electrolytes of choice by distance riders is Perform 'n Win. There might be a new one, I am told, on the market, but I don't know anything about it. Please call me at 705-932-2314 or email me at arabians@cayusecreekranch.com. Be careful of some electrolytes out there that claim to be "the best".

Here is a message from a non-Arab owner about electrolytes:
As a Non Arab owner I had issues with PNW not that it is bad but non Arabs need a lot and I had a lot more success with Ride Rite by ABC with a Non Arab- more calcium etc...

I had the same experience with my Standardbred mare... PnW is not strong enough and doesn't have enough calcium for her. Ride Rite works for her too.

If you are looking for Ride Rite l do supply them and they are from my experience better for the crosses or heavier muscled horses. Then again my purebred arab wasn't able to handle Perform and Win. He needed more calcium and less sugar.

One more question, since we're on the topic- What do you use to keep YOURSELVES hydrated? Or do you keep to plain old water? A friend recommended mixing some coconut water into my drinking water. What are your thoughts?

For me, I use eLoad (usually the Heat Endurance Formula). You can usually find it at running and biking stores. I mix it in with my water and sip it throughout the day. Depending on how hot it is, I may use a few packages.

Teresa, would you mind posting what you've shared? I thought I was doing well, but at Stormont I had a bit of heat/dehydration happening after I landed. Used Gatorade but obviously that didn't do the trick. I too would love to hear what others are doing.

Hi Denise, Some of the Gatorade is real heavy in sugar. There is a new Gatorade out that is better. With my training for the half marathon e-load was recommended. I find with endurance riding that I need a combo of a water bottle and then a bottle of e-load or the new gatorade. Eating also makes a big difference with how you feel. I always make a pizza ahead of time and eat a cold slice at each vet check. That has always help me keep my energy up. Hope that helps. Deb

I have had problems with the heat and electrolytes for myself - I now use E-discs that I can carry in my saddle pack and E-Load (which comes in a powder and you mix with water). I find that they have been very good for me. I also didn't like Gatorade for the taste, all the sugar and it didn't seem to help me a whole lot. And yes, eating small amounts regularly throughout the day also helped me a lot.

That was me Donna- I originally found out in Florida when Miss T crashed at the end of a ride and had to be treated. The treatment vet took my PNW and threw it across the paddock and told me no horse could compete on those ..now BEFORE everyone starts yelling of course she was wrong, lots of horses compete successfully on them. What I found in researching the subject later was that many Non Arab owners had the same issues as I had and had switched to products with more calcium. I also now know the signs in Miss T ( erratic heart rate) and give her extra calcium right away. I think part of the reason it is also not a huge deal in Ontario is that we have good, rich hay that has calcium in it ( NOT in Fl) also beet pulp has calcium in it however my horse does not eat beet pulp at rides!
I also do wonder when people are having HR issues with their horses at rides and I hear people saying give them more elytes! Whether that horse actually needs more salt or just the trace minerals found in elytes???
Anyway things to ponder. What else are we going to do while out on the trail for hours?????LOL Think, think, think.
