I've looked at the rules and in reading Rule 2.11A.12a and 2.11A.12b, I understand this to mean that a novice rider can participate in one open CTR ride and then continue doing novice rides without losing their "novice" status for year end points.
As well, when a novice rider has completed 10 novice rides OR has done more than 1 open CTR (or 1 endurance), then they are no longer novice riders and cannot earn points in the novice division. If they are no longer eligible and choose to do a novice ride, then they would be riding for mileage only.
All of this is correct? I want to make sure that I have this right for the novice rider/junior (Stephanie) who has been coming with me to rides.

The other point that should be made is if you are or have been an open rider and are starting a young horse you can ride in the Novice division, BUT for MILEAGE only, NO points and No ribbons.

| Thats interesting there where seasoned riders at a ride this season that rode the novice division on a new horse and got a placing ribbons etc...Someone told me afterwards that that was within our rules. |

I don't know about the ride Leslie, but the rules provide for Novice Rider and Novice Horse. An experienced (Open) rider can ride a Novice Horse in a Novice ride but it clearly states that the rider (who is not "Novice") and the horse will earn mileage ONLY, not points, placings or awards.
The rider in the horse-rider team must be a Novice Rider in order to earn points, placings, awards as a Novice.
See rule 2.11A.13a - A Novice Horse is a horse that has never competed in any long distance ride and may be ridden by any rider in the NOVICE Division for three (3) rides. Such horse-rider combination will be required to meet all judging parameters and will pay the same entry fee and can accrue mileage, BUT WILL NOT be eligible for placing, awards, or points.

Talk to Chrystal. I think she's looking into it. I dumped the issue on her |

I will be amending our ride entry form so it has a place to indicate that you are riding "hors concours" in the Novice division to prevent this from happening again in the future.

Ok.l but please remember volunteers are not perfect so if you are riding "hors concour" make sure it gets put on your VET card so the scorere do not go ahead and put you in the Novice Division for points.
Thanks

| If it makes anyone feel any better, this has happened before a few years ago and a few times. An over sight I'm sure. |

I would like to clarify this, please, because we have made allowances for this in the past and it will affect my entry to Seoul's Corners.
2.11A.14
An Open Division Rider may compete under Novice Division rules and can accrue mileage but will not be eligible for placing, awards, or points. The horse-rider combination will be required to meet all judging parameters and will pay the same fees as Novice Division Riders.
This rule is a separate rule - I take it to mean that as an Open rider, I may ride Hors Concours, and still accrue miles for the horse I am riding - regardless of whether that horse qualifies as a novice horse. We have made this allowance before *particularly* for people sponsoring junior riders; but also for mentors sponsoring non-junior newbies. As a ride manager, we have allowed riders to do this - they pay the same fees as the novice competitors, they do not get placings or points, but they get the miles.
Is this an incorrect interpretation of this rule? That if I want to ride in a Novice ride in order to mentor a novice rider with his young horse, that because I am an open rider and my horse is not a novice horse, my horse and I don't get the miles?
Thanks, |

No, that is correct. You *can* ride Hors Concours in a Novice ride and earn mileage only. This takes into account an Open rider on an experienced horse sponsoring a junior or a new competitor, as well as an Open rider on a novice horse. In either scenario, the horse-rider will only earn mileage and will not be given a placing or earn points in the Novice division. It is the *rider* status that is determinative.

You are fine Kim Did my "resolution rant" ever get publicized? This is one of the things that drives me crazy: rules are put into the rule book without seeing if it conflicts with other stuff. Although people have been working on that in the last few years there is still stuff ( this being one of them) that needs to be addressed.
Any volunteers? I think that the "Novice horse" thing needs to come out and then it will all make sense.

| It was supposed to come out. I think I actually put a resolution forward a couple years ago to remove it as it made no sense what so ever and it passed. |

| We have always allowed that as far as I know. I've been doing ride results for ummm... 10 years at least and have seen it over and over through the years at many rides. It did occur to me yesterday that we don't seem to have it explicitly set out in the rules though. |

Thanks everyone for confirming my interpretation. I recall the motion to remove "novice horse" but would have to dig for the decision.
This thread was a bit confusing and my entry into a novice ride was being questioned (even though I indicated that I was only doing it for miles), so I wanted to make sure that everyone was clear what was meant by "hors concours" (including me).
Mike still needs a safety net with his new horse (and I wanted to help an open horse get some more career miles)!!
Thank you! |
