So! A disclaimer: I have looked through all (ALL) the forum posts on here regarding electrolytes. It appears that almost everyone with purebred arabs prefer Perform 'n' Win over the other brands. Which, of course, is a bit irritating since we can't get it here!
I looked at Apple the other day and the only electrolytes they have were: http://www.domv...h-Lyte.html. Unfortunately the compounds are listed differently than in Perform 'n' Win (http://www.buck.../Detail.aspx) so I can't even do any sort of comparison on them.
So, with my almost-five-year-old mare coming to Stormont with me to do 18 miles, I'm wondering what route to take. Should I purchase some Perform 'n' Win from OCTRA members (I had some shipped to me while I was in Florida last week but they were delivered late, so I have none, and a lovely computer programmer down there has a bucket in his kitchen) or should I look at a more locally-available type product, since Sasha has never had electrolytes before? It is, as someone said, an art not a science... so I don't really even know what she wants. Maybe she would prefer the local stuff! Or is it just bunk? She'll eat anything, probably, so taste isn't the issue.
I'm going to the ride next weekend so I'll probably be looking and asking around to see how people set up their horses and personal accoutrements (pockets! camelbacks! saddlebags!) and see what I can see. But as alwyas, OCTRA help is really, really appreciated! |

Perform'n'win was one of the first elytes developed for our sport, and was developed with help from our very own Director of Equine Studies at U of Guelph, Gayle Ecker, so that is why it is so very popular with Arab owners.
Since then, other formulae have hit the market, and Gayle has been involved with some extensive studies (attending large rides and performing bloodwork before, during and after the ride) along with Dr. Michael Lindinger. Here is a comparison chart that Gayle & Michael put together of various elyte products showing what they contain as well as comments on their efficacy. So, have a look - the ones in green are the ones to consider (there aren't many in green and a whole lot in red).
You can't just go by a chart or what other people use to be completely effective - you also need to spend some time monitoring your horse, including bloodwork from time-to-time in order to know if you are providing the right component in the right dosage at the right time. So, I would say it is a combination of art and science. The good thing about Perform'n'Win is that you can give lots without a great worry that you are overdoing it. The bad thing about Perform'n'Win is that you can give lots without a great worry that you are overdoing it. Good, because if your horse doesn't need much, they'll get rid of what they don't use; bad, because if your horse needs a lot, you have to feed a lot to make a difference (so they often don't work well on the more heavily muscled or hard to cool body types). |

Wow, that is some great food for thought. Electrolyt 7 seems to be European, so probably even harder to acquire (or more expensive). So I guess everyone's right - Perform 'n' Win seems to have the right balances/ingredients.
So I guess the next question is.... does anyone have Perforn 'n' Win I could purchase off them this weekend? Additionally, I do wonder when it will be available here, as someone mentioned that it's in thep rocess of being approved. |

Thank you for posting that chart Kim. Very interesting.
The other problem with people giving electrolites is, they think they are giving it to the horse, but if you watch, the horse spits half or more of it out. So in reality he is not getting much.
And you were right, if you want to know whats going on with your horse, have blood drawn after the event. |

Hi K. Staff. I was just looking over the BB and saw a post from Bob Gielen offering some Perform n Win electrolytes for sale. Here is Bob's post:
"perform and win electrolytes 4 lb tub contact bob gielen or see me at the rides 519 477 2511 or ridealot66@gmail.com"
Hope this helps.
