That was me Donna- I originally found out in Florida when Miss T crashed at the end of a ride and had to be treated. The treatment vet took my PNW and threw it across the paddock and told me no horse could compete on those ..now BEFORE everyone starts yelling of course she was wrong, lots of horses compete successfully on them. What I found in researching the subject later was that many Non Arab owners had the same issues as I had and had switched to products with more calcium. I also now know the signs in Miss T ( erratic heart rate) and give her extra calcium right away. I think part of the reason it is also not a huge deal in Ontario is that we have good, rich hay that has calcium in it ( NOT in Fl) also beet pulp has calcium in it however my horse does not eat beet pulp at rides!
I also do wonder when people are having HR issues with their horses at rides and I hear people saying give them more elytes! Whether that horse actually needs more salt or just the trace minerals found in elytes???
Anyway things to ponder. What else are we going to do while out on the trail for hours?????LOL Think, think, think.
