endurance, milage and CTR??
As a newbie I would like to know where I should start. Would one be better than the other in my case or does it matter?? Does it depend on the horse's capabilities?? I know my guy and being a Peruvian Paso he's bred to sustain these types of long distance riding. |

| I would start with Novice CTR and Mileage. That way you get to learn about the sport and then make an educated decision if you and your horse are ready to move onto the longer distances and/or add speed. CTR is a wonderful place to learn pacing, care of your horse and enjoy the trails at a slower pace, but is still very challenging. I am very glad I did the full 5 Novice rides at the time I was starting. They have raised it to 10 Novice rides before you have to move up, but you can move up after only one or two if you feel you need to. |

I started with a Novice CTR. I read all the articles on this site and then some to help me get started. I am shy and at the time did not participate in the forum which is a great resource for information from experienced people. When I showed up (knowing nobody) OCTRA was very organized and sorted me out very well. The other riders were wonderful and encouraging. In Competitive trail you are paired with another rider, which is excellent for a newbie. My second ride was a mileage and by then I had discovered the forum - had met a few people and was greatly encouraged to come out and ride.
Among the many wonderful things about OCTRA is the great sportsmanship of all the competitors. |

Hi and thanks for the reply Dessia
The next question I have is about weight, I read that there is a weight requierment (sp?) but not for the novice rider. However I could not find the reasoning behind it or what the weight is, can you explain or direct me to the answer? Thanks again. |

| Anita, paired with another rider?? What if I am going to be participating with my friend, can we be together or is it like pulling a name out of a hat, sort of speak, and that's who you are paired with?? |

In CTR riders usually go out in pairs. You can ride with whoever you want to. You just put both your names on the sign up sheet when you pick your out-time.
Novice division does not bother with weight. When you ride open, you weigh in with all your tack, then are put into a weight class. Lightweight, Middleweight, Heavyweight, there are no set numbers for these classes, it is averaged over all of the riders that day. For instance I have always been in Middleweight, except for one ride I was a Lightweight, that was a winning day for me woo hoo! Probably the only ride that I'll be a lightweight.
It's not anything to worry about and it doesn't matter where you end up. Basically your horse will be competing against other horses carrying a similar load. Horses with lighter riders are thought to be working "slightly less" and horses with heavier riders are thought to be working "slightly harder". Depends who you ask, this has been discussed and disputed both scientifically and otherwise, and a topic for another day : )

WELCOME Paso rider, I was in Florida for a few months last year and lots of Paso's were doing long distance.
Check out the training clinic posted under the schedule on the news page and keep an eye out for more clinics to be announced later this year. If you can , coming to ride without your horse and volunteering helps you learn a lot as well, let us know if you make it to a ride and we will do all we can to make it a great experience!!!!!!!!!!
